Hillside Terrace Hillside Terrace Rest Home was established by Mabel Choate in 1945. It was one of many small family nursing homes that existed in the Augusta – Hallowell – Gardiner area during the time before the wave of larger corporate owned facilities. When Mrs. Choate retired in 1958 she turned over the operation of Hillside Terrace to her daughter, Dorothy Walters, who continued until 1972.

After serving as the private residence of a local physician from 1972 to 1984, Hillside Terrace was reestablished as a senior living residence by current third generation owner Lon Walters.

Lon literally grew up in the business, living with his family at Hillside Terrace alongside residents while his mother Dorothy ran the home during the 50’s & 60’s. Today his son Matthew is responsible for the company’s operations.

The building itself was built by Thomas Bond during the Federal Period in 1819. The home was extensively altered during the early 1900’s to add the many distinctive Victorian features seen today. Expansion and renovation projects in both 1994 and again in the summer of 2004 allow Hillside Terrace to offer a total of 16 first floor bedrooms each with private bathroom, two second story bedrooms and a second story suite.
